People burned leaves when I was a kid ... my only motivation to help with raking leaves (other than threat of punishment) was the reward of piling them into a wire basket on the street and watching them burn.

In the gloom of dusk, the burning leaves would create fantastic glowing masses of orange flame, it was mesmerizing. The smoke would rise and hang in a layer over the neighborhood. It was a fall aroma.

There is some deep connection between the sense of smell and our memory. A whiff of burning leaves, and I'm back to autumns 60 years ago, warming up by the crackling basket while my dad marshaled the next load for the fire.

The smell of the burning leaves was so lovely and comforting. I miss that. Of course it's illegal now, like everything in New York.

Speaking of changing weather, the old space heater died. No moving parts, no fuse. So off to Costco for a new one. This one has a fan to move the air and a plastic cover so you can touch this one. It also comes with a remote. Which takes two AAA batteries, which were included.

You can burn in my part of CA in first few months of years as long as you check in with county.

In Idaho out in the county, no restriction, I have burned just about everything that was once part of a tree including leaves.
