STOP IT PEOPLE. THIS IS NOT HARD.
I know we've lived here longer than many of our neighbors, but not all of them. They know that our pickup is on Tuesdays and Fridays. On major national holidays everything gets bumped up a day. Wednesdays are recycling days (although we totally suck at it anyhow). Maybe my neighbors think that Mondays and Thursdays our trash guys go golfing, but they don't; they pick up the other side of town on those days. So they can't make up the day. And I presume they get time and a half or double time when they have to work on Saturdays. Anyway, the schedule is easily accessible on the town's Web site, which is a crummy Web site but has the information.
Why does this bother me so much? Three reasons:
1) My little dog is still terrified of garbage cans, which means I can only walk him on mornings when there is no trash pickup. My neighbors' error adds an extra day of terror for him.
2) When Friday comes and goes with no pickup, most of the folks just leave the trash out for a whole other day, which makes our neighborhood more attractive to vermin -- and bears. A couple of months ago a bear came tearing down the street while I was in the backyard with little dog and the high school kids were waiting for the bus. No one got hurt, but I’d wager a student or two missed the bus for an emergency pants change. We really have to be careful about leaving food an food waste around.
3) It's just stupid. This all just happened the week of Memorial Day. Did anyone think that maybe Memorial Day is a big national holiday but Independence Day is not? And it'll happen again on Labor Day. And I don't even want to talk about Thanksgiving.
We can get this right, gang! It’s really not hard. We have two months till Labor Day — if we start training now I’m sure we can do it.
Meanwhile: Please do not feed the bears.
The trash boneheads here in Rock Ridge will put out a bin with no regard for weather. With our mountains, winds of 30-40 mph are not uncommon, and high wind warnings are readily available from multiple sources. Nevertheless, the lummox next to me will faithfully roll his bins out the night before pickup, and by daybreak they have blown over and his effluvia (none of which was bagged) is scattered throughout the neighborhood (half of it in my yard). He stands there looking mystified, even after the 8,375th occurrence. Gawrsh! LOL wut?
ReplyDeleteI don't understand it. One neighbor has perfectly adequate trash cans but he puts it all out in garbage bags. We all get to see his trash when the crows get to work. Maybe he's like the "Feed the Birds" lady in Mary Poppins.
